Publication History[编辑 | 编辑源代码]
And What Shall I Find There? was first published in MySpace Dark Horse Presents #23, in June 2009. The story was later collected together with 1947 in the trade paperback B.P.R.D.: 1947 in July 2010
Synopsis[编辑 | 编辑源代码]
The story takes place in Spring, 1938 in rural southeast France. Trevor Buttenholm had graduated from Oxford and was touring the continent and travelled to a small church where he stayed the night to have "time alone... with God." Bruttenholm wanted the church to himself to find a painting his Uncle had told him was hidden in the bell tower called "Pere Pierre le Begue". It depicts the titular priest in portrait with a horrific creature behind him. The painting resulted in Pierre and the artist being murdered by the congression. Later, the creature appears, but it is expelled when Bruttenholm burns the painting. After this Bruttenholm claims he hasn't felt fear like that since because nothing ever compares to the first time.
Resemblance[编辑 | 编辑源代码]
The story bears a great many similarities to M.R. James' ghost story "Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book". Both tales feature a haunted illustration that depicts a demon, a haunted church, the demon later coming to terrify the protagonist, and the demon being banished with the burning of the illustration. The comic even makes reference to the church that forms the setting of "Scrap-Book": Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.
